Civil Engineer (volunteer) – NY/Haiti

ARCHIVE is seeking Civil Engineers (volunteers) to be based in New York and/or Haiti from February 2011. The role requires a part-time commitment of 3-6 months.

Min. Requirements: Successful candidates will have a minimum of 2 years experience in civil engineering and project management. Candidate must have a BS in Engineering.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will participate in the planning, designing, overseeing, and managing of tasks for engineering projects for roads and dams as Project Engineer or Assistant Project Manager. Good written and oral communication skills are a must. Job duties may include participating or directing the inspection of existing engineering projects, recommending studies and improvements, preparing calculations, reports, drawings and specifications for complex projects with tunnels, dams, slopes, embankments, levees, earth retention systems, anchoring systems, shallow foundations, piles, piers, and pipelines.

The successful candidate will also be involved with directing the solution of problems involving groundwater seepage, stresses and deformations of tunnels and dams using numerical models, such as finite element and differences, performing seismic hazard assessments, liquefaction analysis, and slope stability analysis. Candidate will supervise geotechnical investigations including planning and laying out borings, clearing utilities, logging soil and rock materials and jointing found in boreholes, conducting water pressure tests in rock, and interpreting borehole televiewer data.

Skills, knowledge and experience:

? Excellent written and verbal communication skills

? Ability to problem solve and think outside the box

? Strong computer skills. The successful candidate should be familiar with the use of the following software or their equivalents, and be able to supervise and direct other engineers using them: FLAC, Plaxis, UDEC, Dips, Unwedge, SWEDGE, Roclab, and SketchUP. Ability to use AutoCAD, Civil 3D 2008, Microstation.
