Volunteer Construction Manager Needed! (Haiti)

ARCHIVE (Architecture for Health In Vulnerable Environments) is an international charity using housing design as a key strategy for preventing illness and providing care among the most disadvantaged.

We are seeking a Site Construction Manager (volunteer) to be based in Saint Marc, Haiti from January 2010. The role requires a commitment of 3-6 months. Candidates will be expected to cover the cost of return travel to/from Haiti as well as in-country living expenses.

Min. Requirements:

Successful candidates will have a minimum of 3 years experience in construction management and project delivery. Candidate must have a BS in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, International Development or a related field.

Job Summary:

The Construction Manager will supervise multiple projects and report directly to a senior staff member while interfacing with client personnel including Architects, Engineers & Owner. He/she must be able to perform successfully in a team environment. A successful candidate will have the ability to fully comprehend construction contract documents and details, along with a solid understanding of construction principles and techniques. Cultural sensitivity and the ability to adapt to a new environment is a must.

Responsibilities:

• Directs and coordinates activities of designated projects to ensure that goals or objectives of the projects are accomplished

• Interfaces with city/country agencies, engineers; manages regulatory approval processes

• Bids projects out to various subcontractors and reviews bids to ensure clarity in scope of work

The Construction Manager will organize work to enable delivery to take place in a timely manner, with a minimum of disruption to the activities of the client. Develops a work plan while determining critical decision dates and directing and coordinating activities of vendors, contractors and suppliers to ensure project progresses on schedule. Prepares status reports during construction and reviews and provides technical advice. Creates and maintains all project related documentation and correspondence including submittals, RFI’s, change orders, and payment requisitions. Prepares project closeout documents and assure final punch list work is complete. Other duties are required.

Skills, knowledge and experience:

? Excellent written and verbal communication skills

? International work experience (desirable)

? Ability to problem solve and think outside the box

? Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

? Well organised, efficient and self-motivated

? Dependable and resilient

? Good teamwork and leadership skills

? Fluency in French or Creole highly desirable
